Got some catchin’ up to do: Thanksgiving

Got some catchin’ up to do: Thanksgiving

As previously mentioned, in the true spirit of Thanksgiving, we hosted our realtor and car salesman for dinner.  Cooking Thanksgiving dinner is always challenging (after one year with a faulty meat thermometer, I constantly second-guess the doneness of the turkey), but having a tiny oven, limited cookware and a small refrigerator made the margin of error that much smaller.

Due to small oven size, we decided that we would only cook one breast and two legs.  The turkey breast was, no joke, 3 lbs.  And the legs didn’t have the lower “stick” part of the drumstick.  But by far the weirdest thing was the neck.  I wanted a neck so I could make gravy, but the ones at the butcher shop were about a foot long.  We asked, in Polish, for half of the neck.  The lady went into the back room and came out with both halves in a bag.  At least I now had pieces that would actually fit in the pot…..

We think that Tomasz and Łukasz enjoyed the dinner, although sweet potatoes, stuffing and cranberry sauce (from the can!) were new to them.  Tomasz remarked after dinner that he was very tired and we explained that was perfectly normal.  While turkey is available here, I don’t think it is gorged upon in such a fashion.

In all, we had a great time and lots of leftovers.  Which is what Thanksgiving is all about, right?
